Some Tunes to Get You Through...

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

These times are very different than anything we've experienced before. I've found some tunes that have made it easier for me to get through these times and help with my mental health.

Sometimes you need a tune that is uplifting that you can totally DANCE to

and sometimes you need one that you can belt from your bedroom or in the shower or when you're lying face down on your couch, waiting for your third pizza pocket to heat up...

ANYWAY, here's a short (haha) list of songs that I've had on repeat since we've been in isolation!

When I need to feel peaceful:

Frederick Chopin is one of my favourite composers of ALL time (aside from Beethoven!) and his piano nocturnes are so soothing. This is one of his most famous nocturnes and has been used in several film soundtracks, such as Saturday Night Fever (1977).

Apparently, this version of Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole was recorded in ONE session! So cool. Always makes me feel peace.

A great one to sing along to AND practice belly breathing.

When I need to get up and dance!

This song ALWAYS gets me smiling and in the green zone! "You Can Call Me Al" is kind of silly, has a great beat, and the video is particularly funny because Paul Simon is 5'3" and Chevy Chase is 6'4".

Have you ever been Rick Rolled? I have, but only twice... This song is still a great one to dance along with, and you can try out some dance moves from the 1980s!

Pharrell has ALWAYS been such a great artist, and then he made me DANCE! Can you make up your own dance moves to this song, and get your whole family involved?

When I want to just belt it out!

This one is good for singing and dancing, which is always a good combo in my books...

Green Day did a cover once and it was good, but not as epic as these guys!

CLASSIC karaoke song, comin' atcha! Grab your hairbrush, or something that you can make into a microphone, and sing in your best Steven Perry falsetto!

LA LA LA!

"...it's the CIIIIIRRRRRRRCLEEEEE of LIIIIIIIIIIIIFE..."

Gotta get some Disney tunes in here!

(the Zulu language is never sung correctly at that first part is it?)

Bonus video: here's the Broadway cast of The Lion King just randomly singing on a plane... I cry when I watch it! So good.

When I just gotta be SILLY!

I had never once in my life thought about what the fox said until Ylvis (comedy duo from Norway) brought this to my attention. I'd never needed to know until that day.

(the fox actually BARKS!)

The Heritage Primary Choir actually sang this song 2 years ago! We had SUCH a blast... who remembers the actions?!

When I'm having a bad day and need to sit with my Blue Zone emotion:

I think this song came out when I was in grade 11? Wow, that's a long time ago..

Anyway, sure helped me regulate my emotions and calm down when I was frustrated as a teenager!

The Heritage Primary Choir was singing this song THIS year! Sing along if you remember the words! They're not too hard.

Dear Evan Hansen is one of my favourite broadway soundtracks! This is a clip from a Home Produced talk show with James Corden. He says a lot of great things about the COVID situation in the world right now, and ends the show with part of the song "You Will Be Found." Our Intermediate Choir was preparing this song. Grab the tissues.

And finally, when I need to feel inspired or motivated!

Hamilton is one of the most breaking musicals of the past 20 years. Written and starring Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also wrote music for Moana), this song is great to chant when you're ready to try something new!

Ready to ROAR? Stand up, dance, sing, twirl, and make yourself heard! This one is SO catchy and the lyrics are great!

Thanks, Katy Perry!

And finally, this super fun video that the Heritage Elementary School staff made JUST for you! Take a look and let me know your thoughts!
